"The Spot" Breaks Box Office Records, Becoming the Most Profitable Movie in History
The new Big Movie produced film The Spot has entered its third week at #1 at the box office, making it the official Movie of the Summer and earning nearly $300 million against a mere $50 budget. This not only makes The Spot one of the highest grossing movies of 2018, but also the most profitable in history.
After the financial disaster of Big Movie’s last project Swan Lake: The Reckoning, which only scored $900,000 against a $200 million budget, the studio decided to go small, hiring no-name director Kerm Fergus and lowering the production cost. Speaking on the failure of Swan Lake, Big Movie president Lionel McHumble recalled, “People weren’t ready for a post-apocalyptic ballet action flick. It doesn’t sell well in The Nation of Walmart. Superheroes are what is happening.”
Production on The Spot began a mere 30 days before its slated release, with writer/director/actor/caterer Kern Fergus being helmed as director. Fergus has worked before on hundreds of micro-budget films, which he funded from working as the subject in a series of medical experiments. Fergus operating as both his cast and crew meant less money needed to be spent on set designers, cinematographers and editors. “Every film crew is unionized these days” stated executive producer Clive Romero, “Fergus is the kind of worker we need. He’s fast, cheap, and doesn’t complain about pay”. The Spot was filmed at Fergus’s aunt’s house using only an iPhone 7. Production was wrapped a week after filming began.
The Spot follows a mild-mannered gardner named Stu Pot, who lives a secret double life as the shadowy crimefighter The Spot. The Spot has the ability to stick on walls without falling down and thwarts criminals by scaring them with his appearance. His catch-phrase, “I’m the Spot”. When discussing his inspiration for the script, Kern Fergus stated it was “based on a true story, about a guy from high school”. He describes the character as being “the most pure and good superhero, but with his own demons he’s battling”.
The success of The Spot led to what is know as “Spot-Mania”, with tons of merchandise and fans cosplaying as the titular character. Many of Big Movie’s competitors have been pulling their films from theaters, for fear of having to compete with The Spot.
“This is the best thing to happen to Big Movie ever” says Lionel McHumble, “We finally have enough substantial funds to supply cocaine for all of our writers and executives.”
The Spot has also become a giant hit in The Nation of Walmart, who have set aside their threats of nuclear war following the poorly received Swan Lake: The Reckoning. McHumble is hoping that The Spot will keep the peace between the two nations.
